A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ahmed Gulak, has been shot by unknown gunmen in Owerri, Imo state capital, many sources have reported.
Mr Gulak’s daughter, Muneerah, confirmed his demise on Twitter Sunday morning but did not elaborate on the circumstances leading to the incident.
Mr Gulak, a former political adviser to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, was ambushed and shot on his way to Sam Mbakwe airport on Sunday morning, broadcaster AIT reported.
Sources said Mr Gulak was scheduled to board an 8:30 a.m. flight to Abuja after a visit to Imo before he met his death.
His death comes as unknown gunmen continue to attack security formations and public facilities in the South-South and South-East region, killing security agents and destroying stations.
Until his death, Mr Gulak was a chieftain of the APC. He defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in February 2018 after an intractable disagreement with the PDP hierarchy who denied him his aspiration for the chairmanship of the party.
